Q. Does this ballast kit come with mounting instructions?
A. No. The Nano Ballast is so small and versatile, we cannot possibly come up with every mounting scenario. Since this unit will run 28W, 32W, 36W and 55W bulbs, we cannot provide a reflector with this unit since we do not know which length bulb will be used.


Q. What's the difference between all the color temps (K)?
A. Here’s the best way to summarize it:
5,000K = Warm daylight, slight hint of yellow when fired next to a 10,000K. Great for freshwater fish and plant tanks.
6,700K = Nice white, not as visually bright as a higher K bulb. Not as yellow as a 5,000K, also great for freshwater fish and plants.
8,800K = Strong, bright, crisp light, comparable to 10,000K.
10,000K = Bright crisp white light.
Actinic 03 = Violet light, ideal for invertebrates. HelloLights true Actinic 03 has phosphors that will cause fluorescing in certain reef animals.
Blue 7,100K = Bright blue light. This will not cause very nice fluorescing, but rather is for a visual balance, helping to "whiten" up yellow looking lights.
50/50 = 1 tube has either Actinic or Blue 7,100K, and the other has daylight. This is great if you want a nice mix of white/blue light.


Q. What's the difference between German (straight pin) and Panasonic (Square pin) bulbs?
A. Square Pin bulbs are slightly "wider and longer" than straight pin ones. They seem to be the more popular choice among hobbyists. Both types are available from most shops. If you end up choosing the SQUARE pin, be sure to "stretch" out the lamp clips a bit, as the reduced pressure will minimize bulbs breaking.


Q. How often should CF bulbs be changed?
A. If you run your bulbs about 10-12 hours a day, we suggest replacing bulbs every 12-18 months, depending on types of corals being kept.


Q. What's the general difference between CF lighting and that of VHO?
A. CF bulbs have the greatest advantage over VHO when it comes to size and lifespan. A 95W VHO is 36", while you can get a 96W "Quad" bulb that's only 17" long! CF bulbs also last 2 to 3 times longer.
some people feel VHO Actinic is more intense. Disadvantage: Higher start up costs and bulbs are easy to crack, if not handled with care.


HelloLight's Advice:
1) Make sure bulb is pushed firmly into the socket, as partial contact will cause an arc between contacts, thus melting the base, and causing potential damage to your fixture.
2) Care should be taken when inserting these bulbs into your socket. Compact Fluorescent bulbs are fragile by design, and can easily crack. Please take extra care and time when changing bulbs, and refrain from removing bulbs unnecessarily.
