General FAQ

What's the difference between a "Blue 7,100K" and "Actinic 03" bulb?
A little background: The original Actinic bulb was made by Philips. They had several models, the Actinic 01, 03, 05, etc. They were not made for aquarium use, but were adopted once news spread about the beneficial aspects of using this bulb over reef tanks. Nowadays, "Actinic 03" has become the marketing term used to identify "blue" looking bulbs. Many bulbs are passed off as "actinic", when they are just a blue bulb.

So, to answer the question, Blue 7,100K bulbs are visually brighter than HelloLights Actinic bulbs. Blue bulbs will NOT fluoresce your animals as well as our Actinic bulbs. Many others sell "actinic", but they are really selling blue bulbs. The phosphors coating the interior of our Actinic bulbs are specially formulated to produce a narrow spike of concentrated violet/blue light. This is why they appear to be more faint than blue bulbs. If you have tons-o-corals, then we suggest going with Actinic 03. Remember, a visual measurement of a lights utility is a poor one.

Will a 50/50 bulb cause some of my corals to glow?
Yes, assuming of course that your corals have the correct pigments (i.e. green). It will also not be as noticeable, since it's not an Actinic only. The 10,000K will wash out some of the visual fluorescing.

How would I run only 1 lamp on the ARO AS220/MR192 Ballast?
Just wire up 1 lamp per the wiring diagram and safely cap off the wires for the other lamp using wire nuts. This would allow you to run a single lamp.

Can I run T5 HO (High Output) lamps on an ARO AS220 Ballast? I saw another raw ballast on another site, and it claims to 'run anything'.
This ballast will "run" T5 HO lamps, however, it's not recommended for T5 due to performance degradation. Sure, the AS-220 will light those lamps, but you will not get the performance out the lights that you think you are getting. Remember, if it claims to "do it all", be wary. With lighting, you should use the proper ballasts to drive the lamps they were designed for. This will give you the best possible performance for your aquarium.

Why are the wires coming out of the ballast silver, are they aluminum?
No. The wires coming out of the ballast are copper coated with tin (like solder). Although they are silver in color, they are not aluminum, but rather solid copper covered with tin.

I plugged in my new T5 bulbs, and noticed a slight flicker strobing effect at the ends, is this defective?
It depends. There can be many causes to that type of strobing effect. Most of the time, it occurs on new ballasts, and will go away after a few days. If it persists, then it could be a number of things, such as a bad ballast, incorrect ballast or even faulty endcaps. Give us a call at 888-405-1817 if it doesn't go away after a few days.

What's the difference between all the daylight bulbs?
Here is the best way to summarize it:
5,000K = Warm daylight, slight hint of yellow when fired next to a 10,000K. Great for freshwater fish and plant tanks.
6,700K = Nice white, not as visually bright as a higher K bulb. Not as yellow as a 5,000K, also great for freshwater fish and plants.
8,800K = Strong, bright, crisp light, comparable to 10,000K.
10,000K = Bright crisp white light.

I don't see a particular color temp (K) or base style (Square / Straight pin) that I am looking for. Can you get it?
We stock the most popular color temps and bases available. We also can have a new style bulb made, if demand warrants. Let us know what you're looking for. If we get enough requests, we'll try and source it, or have it made.

My CF bulbs keep breaking, why is that?
We'd suspect that your lamp clips are too tight. Stretch them out lightly. The most common breaks we hear about are on the ends of the 2 tubes, where they are connected. This is a fragile area, and it can crack if you are not careful.

Metal Halide FAQ

Can I run a probe start style MH lamp (bulb) on a pulse start MH ballast and vice-versa?
The manufacturers of the ballasts and lamps do not recommend this. What adverse effects will it have? Ballasts/lamps are designed to be run as a circuit within certain tolerances (line input, starting voltage, current, etc.). Electrical components should be operated as specified. By not following these guidelines, you may increase the chance of risk, damage to your equipment, premature failure of lamps and other potential hazards. Lamp manufacturers do not guarantee lamp performance or reliability if incorrect ballast is used with a lamp.

What is the difference between a "probe start" and "pulse start" ballast?
Without getting technical, a "pulse start" ballast has an ignitor which helps start the lamp, while the "probe start" does not have an ignitor. Most ballasts sold in MH fixtures here in the U.S. are "probe start" (ANSI: M57, M58 or M59).

What are the ANSI codes for Probe Start and Pulse Start ballasts?
Probe Start ANSI Codes for Metal Halide lamps: M102=150W, M57=175W, M58=250W, M59=400W, M47=1,000W.
Pulse Start ANSI Codes for Metal Halide lamps: M85=70W HQI, M81=150W HQI, M137=175W, M138=250W, M135=400W.

Why do 10,000K bulb all have different colors? Shouldn't they all be the same if they're marked "10,000K"?
Color Temperature ratings (i.e. "K") is more of a marketing term than a true scientific measurement for color. There are far too many variables when it comes to an accurate "K" rating. Bulbs of the same manufacture can color up differently over time, as the ballast ages. This is why most "K" is used as a reference rather than an absolute. The higher the K, generally the more "blue" the bulb becomes. Sunlight is about 4,500K.

What kind of glass should I use to shield an HQI bulb?
Most regular glass will filter out UV rays. Of course, we are not glass experts, so we recommend that you go to your local Hardware Store, Glass Shop or Frame Store to find out which glass will filter the most UV. You can use tempered glass, since HQI type bulbs burn at a very hot temp, but are not required to.

The end of my HQI bulb chipped while I installed it. What can I do?
Unfortunately, the manufacturer will not accept any kinds of returns for bulbs broken or chipped by the user. With the exception of bulbs broken in transit, we cannot accept any claims on chipped or broken bulbs. We inspect all bulbs before they leave our warehouse to insure they are in new condition, and working. However, The bulb should still work. Be extra careful while installing these bulbs.

One of the ends of my HQI bulb appears melted, is this under warranty?
No. 250W HQI bulbs require proper installation into the sockets. If they are not pushed all the way in, it is possible that the high voltage running the lamp will "melt" one or both ends if they are not seated correctly. Be sure to push your bulb all the way into the socket. If you are not sure how to do it properly give us a call and we can walk you through it.

What ballast do you suggest for the 400W Radium 20,000K bulb?
The 400W Radium lamp is a European lamp for European ballast applications. The lamp was designed for a reactor ballast used for 220/240V input voltage and not for 120V operation in the U.S. We recommend the use of a 400W pulse start ballast (ANSI M135) or a 400w Electronic Ballast for these Radium 20,000Ks because M135s provide a higher starting voltage and use an igniter to assure lamp starting. It is our experience that M59 ballasts can have problems with these bulbs flickering, not starting and/or being unable to keep the lamp fired.
